Practical Mystic

A Mad, Mad Time of Year

May 22, 2014 By Lorna Leave a Comment

22 May

During a call this week a client said to me, “It’s a mad, mad time of year.”

I found it so spot on that I wrote it down and felt compelled to address it today.

If you live in the ‘burbs and you have kids, the pace of these ten weeks of the Spring season can make your head spin.

It seems like everyone I talk to–friends, clients and relatives are all saying the same thing–they don’t feel like they are getting anything done.  They are running here, there and everywhere and there aren’t two minutes to breathe.  They feel like they are barely keeping their heads above water and nothing on their to do lists is getting crossed off.

I urge everyone to forget the to do list.

You read that right, forget the to do list.

For the Spring season here is a small sampling of what goes on in our small town: soccer, baseball, lacrosse, softball, tennis, fencing, track, hockey, basketball, swimming, graduations, college visits, proms, pre-proms, post-proms, confirmations, first communions, weddings, season openings, budget votes, finals, end of year classroom events, chorus, band and orchestra concerts, college kids home for the summer, house guests visiting New York for the blooming flowers….the list goes on and on.

If you have multiple kids your family could be participating in  75% of the above list.  Back when my kids were younger there was a Spring that our family was rostered on 13 different teams.  We all had multiple commitments, my husband and I included.  There is no doubt that it was cray cray, but we did it.

So please.  Give yourself a break.  Buy food, keep gas in the car and just do your best to get everyone where they need to be.  For the most part that is all that is humanly possible anyway.  If you are worrying about your to do list you are just going to feel less than.  Please, let it go.  The list isn’t going anywhere.

Try to enjoy your time in and on fields, courts, churches, balconies and school venues.  Try to embrace the weather and the excitement of these events.  Know that this whirlwind will spin itself out and soon enough the longer, slower days of Summer will be upon us.

Then we can have a whole different conversation about how lazy we are all being.

But for now—take the pass, and enjoy this mad, mad time.

Hugs,

Lorna
