Practical Mystic

That time when Oprah pissed me off

August 5, 2016 By Lorna Leave a Comment

5 Aug

If I didn’t think it would break the screen, I’d be throwing large, heavy objects at my television set.

I was mad. Exasperated. Pissed off.

What was she thinking? How could Oprah, my beloved Oprah, be airing this nonsense? How could she possibly be devoting an entire hour to this utter crap?!?

I mean, a few weeks earlier I was miffed when she recommended an $800 pair of black pants. I shook my head, thinking Oprah had really lost touch.

The pants thing was bad enough, but this? Today Oprah really crossed the line. It was worse. Way worse.

The episode was called “The Secret”.

I’m sure you’ve heard of it.

Now, if I’m being honest, I didn’t watch most of show.

But I watched enough to determine for myself that “The Secret” was complete, airy, fairy ridiculousness. It had nothing to do with hard work or achievement, rather it was all kinds of “ask and you shall receive” pie in the sky stuff.

It didn’t gel with anything I had been taught about life, so it had to be wrong. How could Oprah be so off base?

I wasn’t willing to question my own beliefs, so I immediately put up my walls of defense, stuck my fingers in my ears and started singing “la la la la la la la.”

I wrote it off, resisted it, belittled it. I was so threatened by this new way to approach life that I even let my opinion of Oprah be changed (after watching her for 20 years!).

I have since learned that the things I resist most fiercely are often the things that I need most for my growth and development as a person. But I wasn’t ready to face that yet.

Flash forward six or seven years. After a good amount of self development, I was no longer intimidated by ideas different than my own.

Enter The Law of Attraction.

While I didn’t know it at first, “The Secret” was a marketing twist and another way to say Law of Attraction.

When I was introduced the second time around I dove in with curiosity. Because I was open to these new ideas, I gobbled it all up. It made so much sense. I could see the ways it had always been at work in my life–both to my advantage and disadvantage.

When I realized that The Law of Attraction is active in our lives 100% of the time, I cleaned up a lot of my thinking to allow more of what I love into my life. The results were astounding.

I finally understood that life could be a lot easier than I had comprehended. I appreciated more than ever being in the place where I was willing to question my own beliefs.

Suddenly I was the airy fairy–and couldn’t have been happier about it.

When I finally went back and watched the full “Secret” episode I realized that Oprah had said it all back then:

~Your thoughts make your reality.
~Everyone is made of energy, is connected and is emanating a vibration from their thoughts and feelings.
~Like attracts like.
~The Universe doesn’t label “good” or “bad” it simply delivers what you think about and believe.
~You put a vibration out and by Universal Law, it must be matched.
~You are placing orders with The Universe all day, every day, whether you realize it or not.
~People claim to want things (happiness, money, relationships, success, houses, vacations) but then simultaneously block them from their lives by not believing that they can have them.

What about action, you may be asking? You can’t just sit on your couch thinking and believing and expect anything to happen. While that’s true and there is action, it isn’t the kind that you are accustomed to. Action from alignment is never difficult. Other people might classify it as work, but you won’t.

I’ve learned a lot more about the Law of Attraction over the years and now have a much greater understanding of how it works, why people think it doesn’t work and how to use it to truly get the things you want in your life.

Today the Law of Attraction is never far from my mind. I use it personally, as part of my coaching philosophy and teach it in my group programs.

So in the end, I still can’t wrap my head around an $800 pair of black pants, but “The Secret?” Oprah was spot on about that one and I’m back to loving her as much as ever.
